The Situation

Our client, mobile phone giant, Samsung, launched a campaign in Singapore amongst drivers to increase awareness of safe mobile phone etiquette while driving as a recent survey had shown that more than eight out of ten drivers admitted to using their phones while driving. The aim was to help drivers focus on the road, for the safety of all road users.

Our Solution

Akimi created an Android mobile application for Samsung to help drivers eliminate distractions. The app would automatically block all calls and text messages from the mobile phone of the user at the wheel. The caller or text-sender would receive an automatic reply of this. Conveniently, all temporarily hidden incoming alerts would be revealed upon deactivation of the ‘Drive Safe’ mode once the user was stationary. The app used the user’s sensor fusion technology and GSM cell towers to measure the user’s speed to determine if they were driving.

The Result

Traffic Police and Singapore Road Safety Council endorsed the app wholeheartedly while drivers welcomed the it. They found it easy to use, and had peace of mind with uninterrupted driving. To sweeten the deal, Shell petrol vouchers and insurance premium discounts were offered to incentivise drivers to activate the app while on the move. Through this campaign, Singaporean drivers were made more aware of the benefits of not being distracted with their mobile phones while driving, and to make road safety their priority.
